Travertine is one of the most common pool deck materials in South Florida because it stays relatively cool underfoot and has a natural, upscale look. But because it's a porous natural stone, travertine cleaning and sealing needs a different approach than concrete or pavers — the wrong chemicals or too much pressure can pit the surface or strip a sealer that was doing its job.

Why travertine gets dirty and stained around pools

Travertine's naturally porous structure is great for staying cool, but that same porosity soaks up suntan oil, pool chemicals, leaf tannins, and mineral deposits from sprinklers or hard water. Add South Florida's rain and humidity, and you get algae and mildew forming in the stone's natural pits and holes, especially in shaded areas around a lanai or covered patio.

Travertine should be cleaned with a pH-neutral or stone-safe cleaner and moderate pressure, never a harsh acid wash unless a professional determines the stone can handle it and the goal is a specific restoration. Overly aggressive pressure can blow out the natural holes in the stone (called "popping"), leaving a pockmarked surface. A patient, lower-pressure clean paired with the right dwell time on the cleaner almost always gets better results than more pressure.

Sealing: why it matters

Sealing travertine after cleaning does three things: it slows how quickly the stone absorbs oils and stains, it helps prevent efflorescence from working its way to the surface, and it enhances the color and finish (matte, satin, or a wet-look enhancer depending on preference). Most Florida travertine pool decks benefit from resealing every 1 to 3 years, depending on foot traffic, sun exposure, and the sealer product used.

Maintaining travertine between professional visits

• Rinse off suntan oil, pool splash-out, and leaf debris regularly
• Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, some tile cleaners) that can etch the stone
• Use furniture pads under metal chair legs to prevent rust rings
• Keep an eye on grout or joint sand between paver-set travertine for erosion
